BFree Homestyle Sandwich White Sourdough Loaf Review

  • Facebook
  • Email

Finding a good gluten-free sandwich bread can be one of the biggest challenges after going gluten-free. I've tried almost every brand I've been able to find over the years, and while some are decent, many are either too small, too dense, or fall apart before you can finish your sandwich.

In this review, we'll take a look at BFree Homestyle Sandwich White Sourdough Loaf and see how it compares. I'll cover the taste, texture, ingredients, nutrition, price, and whether I think it's worth buying.

About BFree Homestyle Sandwich White Sourdough Loaf:

BFree specializes in gluten-free baked goods and offers much more than just sandwich bread. Their lineup also includes wraps, pita bread, bagels, rolls, and several other gluten-free products.

You can find BFree products at many major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Costco, Publix, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Amazon, and a variety of other grocery stores.

At my local Walmart, this loaf costs $5.97.

Each loaf weighs 14.1 ounces and contains around 12 slices.

One of the first things you'll notice is that the slices are much larger than most gluten-free sandwich breads. They're a little thinner than a typical loaf of white bread, but I actually prefer that because it makes for a more balanced sandwich without feeling overly heavy.

Nutrition & Ingredients:

It also contains pea protein and may contain sesame and soy.

A serving size is 2 slices, which contains:

  • 150 calories
  • 30g carbohydrates
  • 2g protein
  • 4g fiber

Taste Test:

The biggest thing that stands out to me is the size. The slices are noticeably larger than most gluten-free breads, making them feel much closer to a traditional loaf of sandwich bread.

The bread itself is soft, fluffy, and surprisingly light. Unlike many gluten-free breads, it isn't dense or gummy, and it doesn't crumble apart as easily while you're making a sandwich.

Another thing I really appreciate is that you don't have to toast it. It tastes perfectly good straight out of the package, which is honestly pretty rare for gluten-free bread. Of course, it also toasts really well if that's your preference.

Despite having "sourdough" in the name, I wouldn't expect the bold tang of a traditional artisan sourdough loaf. Instead, the flavor is much closer to a classic white sandwich bread with just a mild sourdough tang in the background. I actually think this makes it more versatile since it works well with just about any sandwich filling.

  • Smoked Sausage Sandwich
  • Classic Croque Madame Sandwich
  • Bacon Pimento Cheese Sandwich

Pros & Cons:

Pros:

  • Large slices that are much bigger than most gluten-free breads
  • Soft, fluffy texture that's very similar to regular sandwich bread
  • Doesn't crumble or fall apart easily
  • Can be eaten toasted or straight from the package
  • Great for sandwiches, toast, grilled cheese, garlic bread, and more
  • Certified gluten-free and vegan
  • Doesn't come frozen, but freezes well if you want it to last longer
  • Fairly easy to find at major grocery stores

Cons:

  • Nearly $6 for a loaf of about 12 slices

FAQs:

  • Is BFree Homestyle Sandwich White Sourdough certified gluten-free? Yes! Like all BFree products, this loaf is certified gluten-free. It's also vegan.
  • Does it need to be toasted? No. One of my favorite things about this bread is that it tastes great straight out of the package. Of course, it also toasts really well if that's how you prefer to eat it.
  • Does it taste like real sourdough? Not exactly. The texture is much softer than a traditional sourdough loaf, and the flavor is fairly mild. There is a slight tang, but overall it tastes much closer to a classic white sandwich bread.
  • Where can you buy it? I've seen it at Walmart, Target, Costco, Publix, Sprouts, Whole Foods, Amazon, and several other grocery stores.
  • Can you freeze it? Yes! In fact, that's usually what I do after opening a loaf so it lasts longer. When I'm ready to use it, I simply pop a couple of slices into the toaster oven for a few minutes.

Overall Thoughts:

Out of all the gluten-free sandwich breads I've tried, this is probably my favorite.

The larger slices, soft texture, and durability make it feel much more like regular sandwich bread than most of the other brands I've purchased over the years. I also love that it doesn't require toasting, which makes throwing together a quick sandwich so much easier.

Yes, it's a little pricey, but that's pretty typical for gluten-free bread. Considering the larger slices and overall quality, I think it's well worth the cost.

If you're looking for a gluten-free sandwich bread that's soft, sturdy, and tastes remarkably close to regular bread, I highly recommend giving BFree Homestyle Sandwich White Sourdough Loaf a try.
