Bettergoods Gluten-Free Maple Chicken Sausage Patties are frozen, fully cooked chicken breakfast sausage patties flavored with maple from Walmart's Bettergoods line. I've passed these in the freezer aisle several times, and since I occasionally keep frozen sausage in the freezer and really like the Great Value sausage patties, I finally decided to give these a try when I noticed they were labeled gluten-free.

In this review, we'll go over everything you need to know, including the taste, texture, ingredients, nutrition, preparation, price, and whether I think they're worth buying.

About Bettergoods Gluten-Free Maple Chicken Sausage Patties:
Bettergoods is Walmart's private-label brand offering a variety of frozen foods, snacks, pantry staples, and other specialty products.
These are fully cooked chicken breakfast sausage patties infused with maple syrup for a sweet and savory flavor. They're also made without preservatives or added hormones or steroids.

Each package contains 7 ounces and only 5 sausage patties, which honestly surprised me a little. I probably should have read the package more carefully, but I expected there to be more than five patties in the bag.
At my local Walmart, they cost $3.87 per package, which works out to around 78 cents per patty. That's a little pricey compared to some of the other frozen sausage options I've tried.
The package also provides easy heating instructions, so they're a convenient option for a quick breakfast.
Nutrition & Ingredients:
The ingredients include:
- Chicken meat, Water, Sugar, Maple sugar, Salt, Natural flavors, Spices, Vegetable oil, Corn starch, Dextrose, Garlic powder, Onion powder, Maltodextrin, Gum acacia, Maple syrup, Yeast extract

The sausage is labeled gluten-free.
It isn't specifically labeled dairy-free, but there are no dairy or egg ingredients listed.

Preparation:
There are two cooking methods listed on the package: microwave or skillet.
I went with the microwave since that's probably the method most people are going to reach for on a busy morning when they want something quick.

I cooked two patties wrapped in a paper towel for 2 ½ minutes in the microwave.
They were ready to eat quickly and didn't require any additional preparation, which is definitely a plus for frozen breakfast foods.
Taste Test:
Aside from there only being five patties in the package, the size isn't too bad.
Each patty is around ¼-inch thick and a little larger than my palm. They come frozen and are slightly lighter in color than traditional pork breakfast sausage.

After cooking, the first thing I noticed was the strong smell of maple. You can definitely tell these are maple sausage before you even take a bite.
The second thing I noticed was the texture.

The outside was a little dry, and the inside had a fairly spongy texture. It was noticeably spongier than the pork sausage patties I'm used to, which I imagine is partly due to the lower fat content of chicken sausage.
The flavor, however, was actually quite nice.

There's a good combination of savory spices and sweet maple, with just the slightest hint of heat. The ingredients don't specify exactly which spices are being used, so I'm not entirely sure where that little bit of heat is coming from, but I enjoyed it.
The maple flavor is noticeable without being overwhelmingly sweet. These still taste like breakfast sausage rather than a pancake with a sausage flavor, which I appreciate.

They are definitely different from pork sausage. The flavor is a little less meaty and has more emphasis on the spices and maple, but I thought the combination worked pretty well.

- Are they fully cooked? Yes. These sausage patties come fully cooked and only need to be reheated.
- How do you cook Bettergoods Maple Chicken Sausage Patties? The package gives instructions for cooking them either in the microwave or in a skillet. I prepared mine in the microwave. I've also cooked other frozen sausage patties in the air fryer, although I haven't tried that method with these yet.
- Do they taste like pork sausage? Not exactly. The flavor is a little different from traditional pork breakfast sausage. These are less meaty and have more noticeable spice and maple flavors.
- Are they sweet because of the maple? They're slightly sweet, but I didn't find the maple flavor overpowering. There's enough sweetness to balance the savory spices without making them taste like dessert.

- Where can you buy them? Bettergoods is a Walmart-exclusive brand, so you'll find these at Walmart.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, I thought the flavor of these was quite nice.
The savory herbs and spices balance well with the sweet maple flavor, and I liked that the maple wasn't so strong that it completely took over the sausage.
The texture was my biggest issue. They're a little dry and noticeably spongier than the pork sausage patties I'm used to. It's not an inedible texture by any means, but it's definitely something you'll notice if you're accustomed to traditional breakfast sausage.
My biggest complaint, though, is the price.
At nearly $4 for only five patties, you're paying around 78 cents per sausage patty. For something I occasionally like to keep in the freezer for an easy breakfast, that's more than I'd really want to spend.
Would I buy them again?
Probably not. The flavor is good, and I like having a gluten-free chicken sausage option, but at this price point, there are better options out there.
I'm glad I finally gave them a try after passing them in the freezer aisle so many times. They're a perfectly decent breakfast sausage, but they just aren't quite good enough or affordable enough to replace the sausage I already like.
