Bettergoods Gluten-Free Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches Review

Bettergoods Gluten-Free Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches are frozen breakfast sandwiches from Walmart that swap traditional bread for hash brown and egg patties. As someone who loves a good breakfast sandwich, I knew I had to try these when I saw that they were labeled gluten-free, especially since gluten-free frozen breakfast options are still pretty limited.

About Bettergoods Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches

Bettergoods is Walmart's private-label brand offering a wide range of frozen foods, snacks, pantry staples, and other specialty products.

These breakfast sandwiches use two hash brown and egg patties in place of traditional bread, with a chorizo sausage patty sandwiched in between. The hash brown patties themselves also contain cheese and salsa verde for a little extra flavor.

Each 9.6-ounce box contains two sandwiches and costs $5.84 at my local Walmart, which comes out to just under $3 per sandwich.

Bettergoods is exclusive to Walmart, so that's where you'll need to head if you want to give them a try.

Most importantly, the package is labeled gluten-free.

Nutrition & Ingredients

The main components of the sandwich include:

  • Chorizo sausage patty
  • Shredded hash browns
  • Eggs
  • Cheese
  • Salsa verde

The sandwiches are labeled gluten-free but are not vegetarian. They contain pork, milk, and eggs.

bettergoods Gluten-Free Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches nutrition information

Each sandwich contains:

  • 330 calories
  • 10g carbohydrates
  • 15g protein
  • 25g fat
  • 0g fiber
  • 1,090mg sodium

One thing worth noting is the sodium. At 1,090mg per sandwich, these are definitely on the higher end when it comes to sodium.

How to Cook Bettergoods Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches

The package gives you a few different options for preparing the sandwiches, including the microwave, oven, or air fryer.

I decided to use the air fryer since the package specifically recommends that method "for a crispier sandwich." And with hash browns being used in place of bread, crispy sounded like exactly what I wanted.

Each sandwich comes frozen and individually wrapped in plastic. The hash brown patties even have a little waffle pattern pressed into them, which had me feeling pretty optimistic about their crisping potential.

For my first sandwich, I followed the package directions and air fried it for 6 minutes.

It came out nicely browned, but I wouldn't describe it as crispy.

In fact, the hash brown patties were still quite soft and maybe even a little soggy.

Since there were two sandwiches in the box, I experimented with the second one and cooked it a little longer at a slightly higher temperature. Unfortunately, that didn't make much of a difference. Neither sandwich developed the crispy hash brown exterior I was hoping for.

Taste Test

Once cooked, the sandwich sort of held together when I picked it up.

The problem was that the hash brown patties were so soft that my fingers could easily press right through them. As I continued eating, the sandwich started falling apart, making it considerably messier than your average breakfast sandwich.

That said, I actually really liked the flavor of the hash brown patties themselves.

You get plenty of potato flavor along with hints of egg and cheese. The salsa verde adds a slight tanginess and a little cilantro flavor without adding much heat.

And when I say not much heat, I mean basically none. I'm pretty sensitive to spicy food, and I found these much more flavorful than spicy.

The chorizo sausage patty was a little less exciting. It had that somewhat spongy texture that's pretty common with frozen breakfast sausage patties. The flavor was alright, with noticeable hints of chipotle and cumin, but it wasn't anything that particularly stood out to me.

Altogether, the sandwich was okay.

Interestingly, I think the hash brown patties themselves had more potential than the complete sandwich. I liked their combination of potato, egg, cheese, and salsa verde flavors and almost wish I could buy those separately.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Labeled gluten-free
  • Unique alternative to a traditional breakfast sandwich
  • Interesting salsa verde flavor
  • Quick and convenient
  • Fairly filling
  • 15g of protein per sandwich
  • Can be prepared in the microwave, oven, or air fryer

Cons:

  • Hash brown patties don't get particularly crispy, even in the air fryer
  • Soft patties make the sandwich messy and difficult to eat
  • Almost $3 per sandwich
  • Very high in sodium
  • Chorizo patty has a somewhat spongy frozen-sausage texture

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are Bettergoods Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches gluten-free? Yes! The package is labeled gluten-free.
  • What is used instead of bread? Instead of traditional bread, the sandwich uses two hash brown and egg patties made with cheese and salsa verde.
  • Are Bettergoods Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches spicy? Not really. I'm sensitive to spice and found these much more flavorful than hot. The salsa verde adds tanginess and cilantro flavor, while the chorizo has hints of chipotle and cumin.
  • How do you cook Bettergoods Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches? The package provides instructions for cooking them in the microwave, oven, or air fryer. I chose the air fryer because the package recommends it for a crispier sandwich.
  • Do the hash browns get crispy? Not in my experience. I cooked both sandwiches in the air fryer, one according to the package directions and another for a little longer at a slightly higher temperature. Neither developed a particularly crispy exterior.
  • Can you eat them like a regular sandwich? You can certainly try! Mine initially held together, but the hash brown patties were so soft that they quickly started falling apart as I ate.
  • Where can you buy them? Bettergoods is a Walmart-exclusive brand, so these breakfast sandwiches are available at Walmart.

Final Thoughts

Bettergoods Gluten-Free Salsa Verde Hash Brown Breakfast Sandwiches are another Bettergoods product that I'm glad I tried because the concept and flavors were interesting, but I probably won't buy again.

My biggest issue was the texture.

Even after cooking both sandwiches in the air fryer and experimenting with a longer cook time on the second one, I couldn't get the hash brown patties to crisp up. They stayed soft, slightly soggy, and fell apart while I was eating.

The flavor was interesting but ultimately just okay, particularly once the hash brown patties were paired with the chorizo sausage. I actually found myself wishing I could buy those salsa verde hash brown patties on their own instead.

While I appreciate having another quick and convenient gluten-free breakfast option, the overall flavor and texture just didn't grab me enough to spend nearly $6 on another box.
