Disney's Animal Kingdom is one of my favorite Walt Disney World parks, and there's so much to do here beyond riding attractions. Between the animal encounters, live shows, entertainment, beautiful theming, and some of my favorite places to eat and drink, you could easily spend an entire day exploring without ever stepping onto a roller coaster.

Whether you're an animal lover, visiting with little ones, or simply looking for a more relaxed park day, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Animal Kingdom without focusing on the rides.
Here are some of my favorite things to do at Animal Kingdom that aren't rides, along with a few exceptions that I think are worth making time for.
1. Watch the Live Shows
Animal Kingdom has some fantastic live entertainment, and you don't want to skip it just because you're not interested in the rides.
Festival of the Lion King
Festival of the Lion King is a high-energy stage show featuring music from The Lion King, incredible performers, acrobatics, and larger-than-life puppets. It's a fun choice for the whole family and a great way to take a break from walking around the park.
Finding Nemo: The Big Blue... and Beyond!
If you're a fan of Finding Nemo, this theatrical production brings the story to life with puppets, music, and live performers. It's a good option when you want to sit down in the air conditioning for a little while.
Feathered Friends in Flight!
This is my absolute favorite show at Animal Kingdom!
If you're an animal lover, Feathered Friends in Flight! is a definite must-see. This outdoor show features a variety of birds demonstrating their natural abilities, with trainers sharing information about the animals and their care.
Watching these birds fly overhead and seeing their personalities come through is such a fun experience. I highly recommend making time for it, especially if you enjoy learning about animals.
The show typically has several performances throughout the day, but I recommend checking the My Disney Experience app for the schedule during your visit. It's an outdoor show, so weather can affect performances.
Zootopia: Better Zoogether!

Located in the former It's Tough to Be a Bug! theater inside the Tree of Life, Zootopia: Better Zoogether! is a cute 3D show featuring characters from Zootopia.
It's a fun option if you're visiting with kids or just want to see something different. Plus, the theater gives you a chance to sit down and cool off for a bit.
2. Enjoy the Live Music Around the Park

One of the things I love about Animal Kingdom is that entertainment isn't limited to the big theaters. You can find live music and performers throughout the park, adding to the atmosphere as you explore.
Keep an eye out for musicians in Africa, near Feathered Friends in Flight!, and across from Flame Tree Barbecue. You never know when you might stumble across a performance while wandering between attractions.
Entertainment schedules and locations can change, so check the daily listings if there's a particular performance you want to catch.
3. Explore the Animal Viewing Areas Near the Entrance
You don't have to travel deep into the park to start seeing animals. Near the entrance, the Oasis and Discovery Island areas have smaller animal exhibits tucked among the pathways and landscaping.
Depending on the exhibits available during your visit, you may spot anteaters, lemurs, flamingos, tamarins, and other animals.
These areas are easy to walk past if you're rushing toward your first attraction, but they're worth slowing down for. Take your time, look around, and see what you can find. Sometimes the smaller exhibits end up being some of the most enjoyable parts of a visit.
4. Watch Winged Encounters
Winged Encounters is another great experience for animal lovers. This presentation features beautiful macaws flying freely and gives guests a chance to see these birds up close while learning more about them.
It's a different experience from Feathered Friends in Flight!, so if you enjoy watching birds, I'd try to catch both.
There are typically morning presentation times, but check the schedule for your visit. Animal appearances and outdoor presentations can be affected by weather and other conditions.
5. Walk the Animal Trails
Animal Kingdom has several walking trails where you can see animals in habitats designed to resemble their natural environments. These are some of my favorite places to slow down and explore the park.
Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail

Located in Africa, Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail is home to a variety of animals and habitats. You may see gorillas, meerkats, hippos, and other wildlife along the way.
The trail is a lovely place to take your time, observe the animals, and learn a little more about the species that call the park home.
Maharajah Jungle Trek

Over in Asia, Maharajah Jungle Trek features lush landscaping, detailed theming, and several animal habitats.
You may encounter tigers, giant flying foxes, Komodo dragons, and other animals as you explore. The trail has a different atmosphere from Gorilla Falls, with beautiful architectural details and a setting inspired by Southeast Asia.
Look for Animals Throughout the Park
These two trails contain many of the park's smaller and medium-sized animal exhibits, but they're certainly not the only places to see wildlife.
Animals are scattered throughout Animal Kingdom, so keep your eyes open as you walk between lands. You might discover an exhibit you hadn't noticed before or end up spending several minutes watching an animal go about its day.
6. Take a Safari on Kilimanjaro Safaris
Okay, technically, Kilimanjaro Safaris is a ride. But is it really a ride in the traditional sense? Yes and no.
Instead of hopping onto a roller coaster or spinning attraction, you board a safari vehicle and travel through a large wildlife habitat. Along the way, you have the opportunity to see animals such as giraffes, elephants, hippos, crocodiles, and more.
It's one of the best ways to see some of the park's larger animals up close, and the experience can be different every time because the animals move around freely within their habitats.
I'm making an exception for this one because the focus is really on the wildlife experience rather than the thrill of the attraction. If you're visiting Animal Kingdom specifically for the animals, I think it's worth including in your day.
7. Visit Conservation Station

If you want to explore even more animal-related activities, hop aboard the Wildlife Express Train in Africa and head to Conservation Station.
Once you arrive, there's plenty to explore. You can visit the Affection Section petting zoo, which has included animals such as a cow, and check out the animal viewing windows featuring reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
You may also be able to see parts of the animal care process, including the veterinary treatment area and animal nutrition work, depending on what's available during your visit.
Conservation Station is also home to Bluey's Wild World, an interactive experience featuring Bluey and Bingo. Guests can play games, dance, and participate in activities inspired by the show.
This is a particularly good stop for families with younger children, but anyone interested in animals and conservation can find something to enjoy here.
Just remember that getting to Conservation Station requires taking the Wildlife Express Train, so factor that into your plans.
8. Become a Wilderness Explorer
If you've ever wanted to become a Wilderness Explorer like Russell from Up, this is your chance!
Wilderness Explorers is an interactive activity that encourages guests to explore the park, complete challenges, learn about wildlife and conservation, and earn badges along the way.
It's particularly popular with children, but I think adults can have fun with it, too. You don't have to rush through the park checking attractions off a list. Instead, you get to pay attention to the details and learn something new as you go.
Even if you don't complete every challenge, it's a fun way to make your visit a little more interactive.
9. Appreciate the Details Throughout the Park

One of my favorite things about Disney parks is the amount of thought that goes into their design, and Animal Kingdom is especially impressive in this regard.
The Imagineers put an incredible amount of work into creating lands that feel like real places, from the architecture and landscaping to the signs, decorations, and smaller details you might not notice at first glance.
The Imagineers and animal experts who helped develop Animal Kingdom traveled to places that inspired the park, bringing ideas and details back into the design. You can see that influence throughout the different lands.

Look for the Animal Carvings on the Tree of Life
The Tree of Life is one of the most recognizable landmarks at Walt Disney World, but it's worth taking a closer look rather than simply snapping a photo and moving on.
The trunk is covered in intricate animal carvings, with different creatures woven into the design. Spend a little time examining the details and see how many animals you can identify.
Explore the Different Lands
Take a closer look at the architecture, landscaping, artwork, and decorative details throughout Africa, Asia, and the other lands.
There are little touches everywhere that help tell the story of each place. Sometimes the most enjoyable way to experience Animal Kingdom is simply to wander around and notice things you might have missed on previous visits.
10. Explore Pandora

Speaking of incredible theming, Pandora is absolutely worth exploring even if you aren't planning to ride Flight of Passage or Na'vi River Journey.
The floating mountains, unusual plants, winding pathways, and intricate details make this one of the most visually impressive areas in the park.
Take your time walking through the land instead of treating it as a place to rush through on your way to an attraction. Look at the plants, examine the rockwork, and notice how the environment changes as you move through the area.

If you can, come back after dark. Pandora's lighting transforms the land into something truly magical, with glowing plants and a completely different atmosphere from the daytime experience.
It's one of those places where I think the theming deserves just as much attention as the attractions themselves.
11. Try Pandora's Themed Snacks and Drinks

While you're exploring Pandora, don't forget to stop for something to eat or drink. The land has several unique offerings that are fun to try, particularly if you're looking for something different from the usual theme park food.
A few items to look for include:
- Night Blossom: A colorful, layered frozen drink that's become one of Pandora's signature refreshments.
- Pineapple Cream Cheese Lumpia: A sweet, handheld snack with pineapple and cream cheese.
- Cheeseburger Bao Buns: A playful twist on a cheeseburger, served in soft bao buns when available.
Menus change, so check the current offerings before your visit. If you're gluten-free or have other dietary restrictions, be sure to verify ingredients and preparation details with Disney.
12. Browse the Shops

Like the other Walt Disney World parks, Animal Kingdom has its own collection of park-specific merchandise.
You'll find themed souvenirs, clothing, toys, accessories, and other items inspired by the park's lands and animals. Pandora is particularly fun to browse if you're interested in Avatar-themed merchandise.
Even if you aren't planning to buy anything, the shops can be worth a quick look. They're another way to appreciate the theming, and you might discover something you haven't seen in the other parks.
13. Look for Character Appearances

Animal Kingdom has plenty of opportunities to encounter Disney characters, and some of the appearances are a little different from what you'll find at the other parks.
You may spot Safari Mickey and friends, characters from The Lion King, and other familiar faces throughout the park.
One of my favorites is Kevin from Up. I also love DiVine, the performer who blends into the greenery and moves through the park dressed as a living vine.
DiVine is particularly easy to miss because she blends in so well with the surrounding scenery. Keep an eye out as you're walking around, because you might walk right past her without realizing she's there!
Character appearances can change, so check the daily schedule if meeting a particular character is important to you.
14. Have a Character Meal at Tusker House
If you want to combine a meal with character interactions, Tusker House in Africa is worth considering.
This restaurant offers character dining in a safari-themed setting, with appearances by Disney characters in safari outfits. It's a fun option for families and anyone who wants to add a little extra Disney magic to a meal.
Because it's a table-service restaurant, you'll want to check the current menu, pricing, and reservation availability before your visit.
15. Grab a Drink and Snack at Nomad Lounge

Nomad Lounge is my absolute favorite place to grab an adult beverage and a snack at Animal Kingdom.
Located near Tiffins, Nomad Lounge has a lovely, semi-secluded patio that feels like a little oasis away from the busiest parts of the park. It's a great place to sit back, relax, and take a break from walking.
The drinks are delicious, and I think the atmosphere makes the prices worthwhile. If you're looking for somewhere to slow down and enjoy a drink without feeling like you need to rush off to the next attraction, this is my top recommendation.
The lounge also offers small plates, so you can order a snack to go with your drink rather than committing to a full meal.
I highly recommend making time for Nomad Lounge if you enjoy a good cocktail and a relaxing spot to sit. It's one of my favorite Animal Kingdom experiences, period.
Find my full review of Nomad Lounge here.
16. Look for Unique Park Snacks

Animal Kingdom has plenty of snacks worth seeking out, including some options you won't necessarily find at the other Walt Disney World parks.
One of my recent favorites was the brownie cookie dough ice cream sandwich from Terra Treats. If you see it available, it's worth checking out!
Snack menus and seasonal offerings change, so you may find something different depending on when you visit. I always recommend checking the current menu and keeping an eye out for limited-time treats while exploring.
17. Enjoy the Themed Restaurants
Animal Kingdom has some restaurants that are worth visiting for their atmosphere as much as their food.
Rainforest Cafe

Rainforest Cafe is a fun option if you're looking for an immersive dining experience. The restaurant is filled with jungle theming, animated animals, and the occasional simulated thunderstorm.
It's especially entertaining for kids, but the elaborate setting can be fun for adults, too.
Find my full Rainforest Cafe review here.
Yak & Yeti Restaurant

Yak & Yeti is one of my favorite themed dining options at Animal Kingdom. Located in Asia, the restaurant features a richly decorated setting inspired by Himalayan and Asian influences.
It's a good choice if you want a proper sit-down meal in an environment that feels distinct from the other restaurants around the park.
Both restaurants are worth considering if you're looking for a meal that's part of the overall experience rather than simply a place to grab food.
18. Book a Special Animal Experience
If you're an animal lover and want to take your visit a step further, Animal Kingdom offers several paid experiences that provide a closer look at the animals and the people who care for them.
These experiences cost extra on top of park admission, and reservations are generally recommended.
Caring for Giants
Caring for Giants offers a closer look at the park's African elephants, with guides sharing information about the animals, their care, and conservation efforts.
It's a great option for anyone who's particularly interested in elephants and wants to learn more about them.
Find more information on this experience here.
Up Close with Rhinos
Up Close with Rhinos gives guests the opportunity to learn about the park's white rhinos with the help of knowledgeable guides.
You'll hear about their behavior, biology, and the conservation challenges facing rhinos in the wild. It's a memorable experience for anyone who loves these enormous animals.
Savor the Savanna
Savor the Savanna is a premium experience that combines wildlife viewing with African-inspired small plates and beverages.
Guests enjoy a guided experience overlooking the savanna, with opportunities to observe animals and learn more about the environment. It's a pricier option, but it can be a special treat if you're looking for something beyond the standard park day.
Check Disney's current tour listings for availability, age requirements, and pricing before booking.
19. See the Tree of Life Awakenings
If you're staying at Animal Kingdom into the evening, check whether Tree of Life Awakenings is scheduled during your visit.
This nighttime projection experience brings the Tree of Life to life with illuminated imagery and storytelling. It's a lovely way to appreciate the park's centerpiece from a different perspective.
Nighttime entertainment can vary with the season and park schedule, so check the My Disney Experience app to see what's being offered on your visit date.
Final Thoughts
Animal Kingdom is so much more than a collection of rides. Between the animal trails, live entertainment, character appearances, interactive activities, incredible theming, and unique food and drink options, there's plenty to fill a day even if you don't plan to ride anything.
If you're an animal lover, I'd prioritize Feathered Friends in Flight!, the walking trails, and the animal viewing areas throughout the park. If you're more interested in theming and atmosphere, spend time exploring Pandora, examining the Tree of Life, and wandering through Africa and Asia.
And if you want my personal recommendations, don't miss Feathered Friends in Flight!, make time for Nomad Lounge, and keep your eyes open for DiVine hiding in the greenery.
You don't have to race from attraction to attraction to have a great day at Animal Kingdom. Sometimes, slowing down and enjoying everything around you is the best way to experience the park.
